Give your degree a boost

You don’t have to be an overachiever to join the honors program for music and theatre arts — you just have to take your studies seriously and stay on track with solid work. Committing to the honors program in music or theatre will take a little extra work, sure, but you already plan to work hard. Why not give your degree a little added power to help you reach your goals? An honors degree just might open that extra door to an internship, a job, or help you land that first big real-world audition.

McNair Scholars

Upper-class majors with resident and transfer GPA of 3.5 or better, and a 3.5 or better in the major are eligible for participation in the departmental honors program. Participants whose cumulative and/or major GPA falls below 3.5 can still graduate with honors as long as her/his GPA increases to 3.5 by graduation.

Current honors graduation requirements

  • Complete all requirements for major in the department with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better.
  • Complete 3 honors projects in classes representing 3 different honors course options.
  • Honors paper supporting a senior project or performance under the direction of your chosen faculty member. The paper will be presented orally to a committee of three faculty members, including your adviser.

A written application is normally submitted for approval by the departmental honors committee no later than the end of the third week of classes of the junior year. Transfer students entering UWEC with junior status must apply no later than the end of the third week of classes.

Honors Program: Songs and Symphonies

There are about as many different varieties of music today as there are listeners to enjoy them, and what exactly drives us toward our personal playlist is somewhat of a mystery. But helping students open their minds to appreciating a variety of genres and artists along with their favorites has been the life passion of Dr. Jerry Young, professor emeritus of music and longtime University Honors Program instructor at UW-Eau Claire.
