The project is expected to be completed in fall 2018, and the footbridge will be closed from late May to late August in both 2017 and 2018.

    Blugolds Nicole Fox and Emma Nickerson are pursuing different majors, but a UW-Eau Claire summer immersion program that took them to a children’s hospital in California helped them discover how closely their paths may interact in the future. Fox, Nickerson and eight other Blugolds were part of the Shriners Children’s Hospital-Northern California immersion program that gave the students hands-on experiences working with diverse youth who had a significant burn or orthopedic trauma.

    Thanks to a summer immersion program, Emma McIlquham is more certain than ever that she wants to be a social worker so she can help children. The senior was among the eight UW-Eau Claire students considering careers in child welfare who got an up-close look earlier this summer at what it is like to work with high-risk children and their families. The Blugolds, along with Jamie Tester, field director and clinical instructor in UW-Eau Claire’s social work department, spent nearly two weeks in Chicago and Springfield, Illinois, as part of a Child Advocacy Immersion program.

    Commencement exercises for 1,300 students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will be held May 20 in Zorn Arena. Candidates from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences will receive degrees during a 9 a.m. ceremony. Candidates from the College of Business and the College of Education and Human Sciences will receive degrees during a 2 p.m. ceremony.

    It turns out UW-Eau Claire isn’t the only one celebrating 100 years of excellence this year. Jeanette (Lacktorin) Parizino — a 1940 graduate from what was then Eau Claire State — is hitting the centennial milestone right along with her alma mater. The UW-Eau Claire alumna will turn 100 years old May 28. The soon-to-be centenarian, an energetic retired elementary education teacher who lives (independently) in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, will return to UW-Eau Claire May 20 for spring commencement, UW-Eau Claire’s last official event celebrating its centennial.

    Alumnus Chris Gleason earned the Wisconsin 2017 Teacher of the Year title, and also earned a trip to the White House. Gleason, music Ed grad in '97, is the band director and instrumental music teacher at Patrick Marsh Middle School in Sun Prairie, and was among four finalists for the National Teacher of the Year award.

    Courtney Ostert '14, a UW-Eau Claire social work major, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant grant to teach in Taiwan. After completing her current service as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Republic of Georgia, Ostert will depart for Taiwan where she will teach English to elementary- and middle school-age children.

    A Blugold is one of four teachers in the running for the 2017 National Teacher of the Year Award. Chris Gleason, who earned his degree in music education from UW-Eau Claire in 1997, learned this week that he’s a finalist for the nation’s top teaching honor. The Sun Prairie band director is the first Wisconsin teacher in 50 years to be named a national finalist for the award, considered the most prestigious national honor that focuses on excellence in teaching.
