    Students and teachers from Eau Claire schools spent a week learning coding as part of UW-Eau Claire’s coding camp, a summer program that introduces campers to computer science. Blugold Beginnings has offered the coding camp for several years, but this year for the first time three Eau Claire Area School District teachers are joining the 50 Chippewa Valley 6th-12th graders who participate. The teachers hope to learn how they can incorporate coding into their own teaching, something they say would be valuable given the level of interest their students have in technology.

    Math has never been at the top of Sophie Topper’s list of favorite things to do. Yet this summer the 9-year-old is eager to get to her math class every morning and she talks nonstop about what she learned all the way home. Why the sudden interest in story problems, math facts and fractions? The fourth-grader is one of a handful of youth participating in UW-Eau Claire’s summer math intervention program. The program pairs kids — typically elementary school students who need extra help with math — with school psychology graduate students to work on math skills.

Tom Lindner, a 1982 journalism graduate and former newspaper editor who left journalism 25+ years ago for the priesthood, recently returned from a 200-mile hike across northern Spain. He shares his story of following a famous pilgrimage path, known as the Camino de Santiago.

    Even though Sona Mehring realized long ago that nursing was not her thing, she still found a way to help millions of people around the world during their health crises. Sona — a 1983 UW-Eau Claire computer science graduate — retired in June from CaringBridge, a website she founded 20 years ago to help patients’ families and friends easily connect and communicate during a medical crisis.
